This week’s song is by two women who’ve been co-creating together for at least 13 years. I’ve had the joy of seeing them perform several times. Once a very memorable concert on Orcas Island, where I played hooky from a school board meeting that I was technically supposed to be working at (I took the minutes as part of), but the concert was on my birthday! So we piled into a girlfriend’s birthing and caught an evening ferry to Orcas.
This song conjures the kind of witness, patience with grief, and feeling deeply held by ones who understand, that dominant north american culture is bereft of.

Soul Sister
Prayers for Freedom
by Karisha Longaker
Soul sister
I so believe in you
Soul Sister
Though this water is wide
Oh sister
This grief and pain are true
I am here with you
and I will see you through to the other side
Soul Sister
I know the Earth in you
Soul Sister
You are strong and wild
Oh sister
What can I say or do?
I am here with you
And I will see you through to the other side
Oh, Hold out your hands
Or crumble to the Earth
Whatever it takes for you to thrive
Your body knows like a river flows
and she will see you through to the other side
Souls Sister
I so believe in you
Soul Sister
You are strong and wild
Oh Sister
Whatever you're going through
I am here with you
and I will see you through to the other side
